Congratulations to the Brownlees

Alistair and Jonny Brownlee
olympics

University of Leeds alumni Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee added to Team GB’s medal haul at the Olympic triathlon in Hyde Park, winning gold and bronze respectively.

The first British brothers to stand together on an Olympic podium in over a century, Alistair and Jonathan both studied at the University of Leeds.

Alistair was the first Olympic scholar supported by the Sports Scholarship programme, and graduated from BSc Sport and Exercise Sciences in 2009.

University of Leeds staff and students, including the Vice-Chancellor Professor Michael Arthur, were among the crowd in Hyde Park supporting the Brownlee brothers and witnessing their fantastic achievement. Head of Sport and Physical Activity Rob Wadsworth, who was also in Hyde Park, said:

“It’s a fantastic achievement for Alistair and Jonny who have given everything to get up on that podium. Not only have they taken Gold and Bronze, but they will go down in history as the first British athletes to win medals in the Triathlon at an Olympic Games. Everyone at the University is immensely proud of them, especially those who’ve helped Alistair and Jonny balance their studies and training over the last few years.”

Congratulations Alistair and Jonathan!
