Two biological sciences students are the toast of the science world after being nominated for the Science Engineering & Technology ‘student of the year’ awards.

Both Mona Saad and Rebecca Barlow have been recognised for their final year undergraduate projects. Human Physiology graduate Mona has been nominated for the ‘Leadership Forum Award for the Best Biology or Biotechnology Student’.

Rebecca, a Pharmacology graduate, has been nominated for the ‘AstraZeneca Award for the Best Pharmacology Student.’

The awards are considered to be the most important awards in Europe for Science, Engineering and Technology students.

Professor Dick Killington, Pro-Dean for Learning and Teaching, said: “Congratulations to the students and their supervisors. There are three finalists from Leeds in total. For two nominees to be recognised from the Faculty of Biological Sciences is an outstanding achievement. We wish them well for the ‘black tie’ awards ceremony taking place in London in September.”

Mona completed her project on ‘The Spinal Cord Respiratory Rhythm Generator: The Forgotten Mechanism’ supervised by Matthias Dutschmann. Rebecca studied the ‘Muscarinic Acetylcholine Receptor Regulation of the GABA-A Receptor Alpha4 Subunit Gene in SH-SY5Y Cells’ supervised by Alan Bateson.

The awards ceremony will take place at the London Hilton, Park Lane on September 3, 2010.

This prestigious event will have representatives from academia, government and industry in attendance. There are 18 subject award categories (three finalists per category) and from these one student is also named ‘Student of the Year’. The supervisor of the ‘Student of the Year’ is named ‘Lecturer of the Year’.
