Dr Dave Lewis was awarded the Physiological Society's Otto Hutter Physiology Teaching Prize for 2013 at the Physiological Society's annual conference recently in recognition of 'excellence in physiology teaching'.

Dr Lewis was recognised specifically for the introduction of an in-vivo techniques module, a suite of alternative (non-laboratory based) final year research projects, the teaching of bioethics and educational research internships. As part of the award Dr Lewis gave a prize lecture at the conference.

Professor Paul Millner, said: “We’d like to congratulate Dave on his award. All of these interventions aim to make our programmes distinctive and provide an exceptional educational experience for students and enhance the employability of our graduates.”

The feedback from students has also been positive. One student commented: “Dr Lewis’s module was the best module I have attended at Leeds so far because it was unique, challenging and each element of the course forced you to think and act like a scientist as opposed to a student.”

Dr Lewis has also raised the profile of physiology teaching, nationally and internationally, as Chair of the University of Leeds Biosciences Educational Research Group, Co-convenor of the Physiological Society’s Education & Teaching theme, his work with the Society of Biology, the HEA and in developing in-vivo education internationally.

The award also recognises Dr Lewis’s substantial public engagement activities to promote physiology to the wider community and, in particular, to hard-to-reach groups that have limited prior engagement with science.
