Research in our laboratory is focused principally on the structure, function and regulation of membrane transport proteins. We are particularly interested in sugar and nucleoside transporters in relation to diseases such as diabetes mellitus, cancer and parasitic infections of man. A second focus of our research concerns the molecular mechanisms of membrane trafficking processes, which are involved in transport regulation in many eukaryotic cells. Techniques employed in our research range from site-directed mutagenesis and expression of individual membrane transporters to studies of transport phenomena at the cell, tissue and whole organism levels.
