Help with Finding Placements

All information that we receive concerning placements we will disseminate to all students, usually by email. It is up to you to follow through on applications for suitable posts. To increase the likelyhood of success, you must be proactive! Research your own potential placements, contact companies, "go looking" for placements. Use the various Databases and Links to search out contacts. Check regularly for vacancies; the links below are to sites that list placement vacancies and which are worth monitoring on a regular basis.Remember, placements must be approved by the work placement manager. Visit the Careers Centre, check out for work experience ; monitor the work placement centre site on a regular basis.

  • The Year in Industry: The Year in Industry site provides talented young people with paid, degree relevant work placements in the year out before or during their university course
  • National Council for Work Experience: Promoting, supporting and developing quality work experience for the benefits of students, organisations and the economy.
  • Student Placement UK Database: For European students seeking a placement in the UK, but also open to UK students.
  • The Big Choice: A careers site that also allows you to look for placements.
  • CK First Step is a recruitment agency working with students to find placements and summer vacation jobs. Lodge your details with them!

Another useful tip is to have a look at the New Scientist jobs listing. This can give you a better idea of the places that employ life science graduates, and which might be useful to contact regarding possible placements or vacation work. Go to: NewScientistJobs.

Placements Abroad? We are happy to support placements abroad although we do not have any direct contacts. Placements abroad may be in Europe or elsewhere e.g. U.S.A, if in Europe, there is additional funding that may be available via the Erasmus scheme.

The Erasmus Work scheme allows students to take up to 12 months to undertake Work Placements anywhere in
the EU, as a part of their degree, and subject to Faculty approval. Eligible students receive a grant calculated on a monthly basis and also have their University fees waived if away for the equivalent of a full academic year, this is now called Erasmus+ Funding.

All students undertaking a work placement in Europe, as a part of their degree, are eligible to apply for the Erasmus+ grant. Students who work for 2 months or longer and who comply with paperwork requirements of the scheme may be eligible to receive Erasmus+ funding from the European Union. The Careers Centre administers the Erasmus+ work placement grant scheme on behalf of the EU.

Funding levels for Erasmus+ are not guaranteed and will be confirmed on an annual basis in late spring prior to departure but typically students can expect to receive a grant in the region of €450 to €500 per month (depending upon their destination) for up to eight months.

The funding is normally paid in two instalments: approximately two thirds of the grant will be paid as students start their work placement and the balance will be paid at the end of the work placement period. This funding is in addition to any pay you recieve from the company you work for.

It is crucial that students arrange their work placements in good time and apply for Erasmus+ funding as early as possible, at the very least 4 weeks before they are due to start work. If in doubt, please contact Liz Baylin ASAP you have confirmation of a placement in a country in the EU (outside of the UK obviously).
