What is Neuroscience?

Neuroscience is the study of the brain and the nerves that make up the nervous system. The brain controls all bodily activities, ranging from heart rate and sexual function to emotion, learning and memory. Ultimately, it shapes our thoughts, hopes, dreams and imagination. In fact, the brain is what makes us human.

Why study Neuroscience?

You should study neuroscience at Leeds because we will take you on an amazing journey. You will cover all major areas of neuroscience from the molecular to the clinical/pathological from an anatomical, pharmacological, physiological and molecular biological viewpoint. You will also learn about the disorders of the nervous system such as: neurodegenerative diseases (Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s), obesity and cardiovascular disease.

Advanced Accredited Degree

Our Integrated Masters (MBiol) programme has been awarded interim accreditation and our BSc with Industrial Placement Year programme has been awarded advanced accreditation by the Royal Society of Biology.

This course is designed to give you the best possible start into this fascinating field with its incredibly diverse opportunities, working with researchers at the forefront of their field, and studying questions such as; ‘what is consciousness?’ and ‘how do we form and store memories?’

BSc year one

Year one will introduce you to the foundations of biomedical sciences, and provide you with a grounding in a wide range of laboratory and transferable skills. Year one is also a great time to explore other subjects, with modules on offer in microbiology, philosophy and psychology.

BSc year two

Year two will see you specialise in more specific topics, learning about areas such as the structure and function of the brain and spinal cord, and the way in which the brain controls the organs of the body. You will also have the option to undertake an industrial placement or study year abroad in between year two and year three (depending on academic performance).

BSc year three

In year three you will study advanced topics in neuroscience, learning about the most cutting-edge issues facing neuroscience today. Alongside this you will also take on the role of researcher, undertaking your own laboratory or literature based research project under the supervision of a leading academic. Upon completing your degree you will have an array of advanced skills that will allow you to stand out in the graduate job market.

MBiol year three and four

Year three of the MBiol is designed to prepare you for the Masters level of study that takes place in year four. After the research preparation modules of year three, year four allows you to study Masters level modules alongside an extended research project. The extended project is a real chance to undertake research at the highest level, working alongside professional researchers and truly exploring the current issues facing neuroscience today.

Please note that year one and two are the same as the BSc for the MBiol.

Our degrees are delivered through a combination of lectures, tutorials and practicals. The first and second year will see a focus on these three teaching methods, building your skill, understanding and knowledge for your final year research project, which will see independent research and learning complemented with the guidance of leading experts.

Typical timetable (3 year BSc)

  • A typical week in year one includes twelve hours of lectures, a three hour practical session in the lab, additional tutorial, workshop and seminar sessions, plus private study.
  • Year two consists of around eight to ten lectures per week, four hours in the lab either on a single practical or ongoing project, additional tutorial, workshop and seminar sessions, plus private study time.
  • In year three you will have around eight lectures per week and tutorial and seminar sessions (Semester One). Your research project will take around three days per week (Semester Two), you will also attend three to six lectures per week, plus private study time.

Graduate Employment

This degree provides an ideal introduction if you wish a career in scientific research or other careers based in medicine, and also provides an excellent education for careers in teaching and graduate training schemes and research in Neuroscience. Typical graduate destinations include a medical-related careers, drug discovery, scientific writing, and teaching or courses such as graduate entry medicine or physiotherapy.

Neuroscience as a course displays excellent graduate prospects, as well as an exceptional level of employability. Data collected on graduate’s salaries 6 months after graduation shows that this course boasts an average salary of £19,600 (DLHE 2012/2013) - with graduate destinations being varied in their outcome.

Rachael Powis: BSc Neuroscience

The highlight of the course so far has definitely been my research lab placement. I am currently working in the lab of Dr King, a Reader in Neuroscience, with an interest in spinal cord neurophysiology and neuropharmacology, in particular with the molecular and cellular aspects of chronic pain. She has several projects underway; in the lab I have been working in she is researching rhythmicity in spinal dorsal horn sensory processing, which sounds pretty impressive to your mates down the pub!

Careers Support

We take personal development and career opportunities very seriously and the Faculty has a dedicated Employability Officer who works closely with the careers centre. We offer a host of additional opportunities beyond core course content, including volunteering and placement opportunities.

We organise regular careers workshops designed especially for biological sciences students to help develop their career opportunities, including the annual Bioscience Careers Networking Event, offering a chance to meet bioscience employers, speak to alumni, attend workshops and get masses of information.

Careers Centre

The Faculty works closely with the University’s Careers Centre, which is one of the largest in the country. The centre provides high-quality professional support and advice for all our students and access to thousands of opportunities for graduate employment, placements and internships.
