Undergraduate Scholarships 2017

We offer a range of prestigious scholarships to reward achievement and recognise potential. Some scholarships are automatically awarded and focus solely on academic excellence, while others require an application and are based on household income and additional factors.

UK/EU students

Biological Sciences Excellence Scholarship

How much is it worth? Up to £1,000, subject to satisfactory progression.
Who is eligible?

This scholarship is available to UK/EU-rated, fee-paying students who achieve A*AA at A-level (A2) or equivalent. The A* grade must be in one of the following science subjects: Biology, Human Biology, Chemistry, Maths or Physics. The two A grades must be in science or science-related subjects.

Science subjects: Biology, Human Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Physics.
Science- related subjects: PE, Geography, Use of Maths, Psychology, Statistics, Geology and Computing.

How are they awarded? You will qualify automatically for the award of a scholarship if you meet the criteria above. You do not need to apply separately for a scholarship; your application through UCAS will enable us to consider you once you have confirmed us as your firm choice.

Conditions apply
  • Commence a programme of study in the Faculty of Biological Sciences in September and be fully registered on 1 December 2017.
  • Be a UK or EU student paying tuition fees at the UK/EU rate.
  • Have achieved the academic excellence criteria in your previous studies at the first attempt.
  • Maintaining academic excellence is defined as achieving a minimum 70% average mark over 120 credits at level 1 (to include all compulsory modules).

Head of School Excellence Scholarship

How much is it worth? Up to £1,000, subject to satisfactory progression.
Who is eligible?

New UK/EU students who demonstrate academic excellence and are rated ‘excellent’ in their interview.

How are they awarded? You will qualify automatically for the award of a scholarship if you meet the criteria above. You do not need to apply separately for a scholarship; your application through UCAS will enable us to consider you once you have confirmed us as your firm choice.

Conditions apply
  • Have achieved the academic excellence criteria in your previous studies at the first attempt.
  • To be rated ‘very good’ or above in their interview during the applicant visit day.
  • Commence a programme of study in the Faculty of Biological Sciences in September and be fully registered on 1 December 2017.
  • Be a UK or EU student paying tuition fees at the UK/EU rate.
  • Maintaining academic excellence is defined as achieving a minimum 70% average mark over 120 credits at level 1 (to include all compulsory modules).

International Students

International Science and Engineering Scholarships

Who is eligible? This scholarship is available to international rated, fee paying applicant who has been offered a place on any of the undergraduate degree courses within the Faculty of Biological Sciences.
How are they awarded? This is an automatic scholarship and will take the form of a tuition fee reduction.
How much are they worth? Up to £8,000 spread over 4 years, subject to satisfactory progression.
Application deadline No deadline - automatic
Conditions apply
  • Applicants must be self-funding, new to the University of Leeds, enter onto level 1 and classified as international for tuition fee purposes and not be in receipt of any other University of Leeds award.
  • Students must achieve a yearly attainment percentage of 60%. The scholarship will be withheld in a year where a student fails to achieve 60%, but will be reinstated the following year if the student's performance recovers to 60% or over.
  • £2,000 will be awarded per year of study. Students don’t receive the scholarship for the industrial placement year or study abroad year unless it’s incorporated within the programme.
  • Self-funding students who successfully complete the International Foundation Year (IFY) at Leeds will also be eligible for this bursary.
  • Students who receive the Deans scholarship will not be eligible for this award

Deans Excellence Scholarship

Who is eligible? High achieving applicants who have been offered a place on any of the undergraduate degree courses within the Faculty of Biological Sciences that achieve A*AA at A-level (A2) or equivalent will be considered for this scholarship.
How are they awarded? This scholarship is awarded based on academic excellence to the 3 highest achieving applicants and will take the form of a tuition fee reduction.
How much are they worth? £5,000 per year to a maximum of £20,000 for 4 years, subject to satisfactory progression.

  • Applicants must be self-funding, new to the University of Leeds, enter onto level 1 and classified as international for tuition fee purposes and not be in receipt of any other University of Leeds award.

Who is eligible? Full time, self-financed students from India who have an offer of a place on an undergraduate course in the Faculty of Biological Sciences at the University of Leeds.
How are they awarded? This scholarship is awarded based on academic excellence to the 2 highest achieving applicants.
How much are they worth? £5,000
Number of awards Up to two
