Editorial

Wecome to Issue 6 of Biolog-e. This year we have seen many exciting developments in undergraduate e-journals in the UK, not only in Biolog-e but also in the launch of Bioscience Horizons, the first National Undergraduate Bioscience Research Journal. Read on to find out more...

Bioscience Horizons: The National Undergraduate Research Journal

The success of Biolog-e and other Undergraduate Research Journals has prompted a new UK initiative involving a consortium of UK Universities and Oxford University Press http://www.oup.co.uk/ to create the first National Undergraduate E-journal in Bioscience. Bioscience Horizons will showcase the best of new UK undergraduate bioscience research and the first issue of this exciting new journal will be published in March 08 with a second edition in May 08.

The best of this year's undergraduate final year students will be invited to resubmit their work to this exciting new national journal. Your programme manager will contact you if you have been selected.

Biolog-e Competition Winner

We would like to thank all those who entered the Biolog-e Photographic Competition and would like to congratulate Will Clarkson for winning this years competition. The winning entry can be seen on the Hope Page of this Issue and is a great picture of a goshawk chick.

'This goshawk was nesting outside my friend's window near Finchley Road in London on the fourth floor. The parents would return every now and again with food for the chick, which by this time had become huge. I actually spent more time looking at it than talking to my friend, sadly. Luckily we are still friends.' Will Clarkson.

New Look Biolog-e

We have created a new look for Biolog-e. We hope you like it! New features include a search facility through which you will be able to search for research reports and student articles published in Biolog-e between 2003-2007. We continue to publish first class Undergraduate Research Projects and Student Opportunity Articles, written by current students, staff and recent Leeds graduates.

All published student articles and research reports from Issue 1 (2003) to Issue 5 (2006) may be found under the Archive section where you can view the articles in order of subject, student name, title, supervisor surname or issue number by clicking on the relevant heading.

Get Involved

Biolog-e is your journal, and open to all undergraduates in the Faculty of Biological Sciences.

Some of you may be embarking on an exciting venture over the vacation e.g. a summer job or travel relevant to your studies, or you may simply find the time to read or research something of interest to you and related to your subject. One way to build on this is to write a short article and submit it for publication in next year's issue; other students may be interested to read it and you would have something to add to your CV and show your family and friends. We are also interested in hearing from students who would like to get involved in the editorial side of Biolog-e - it's your journal so let us know how you'd like it to look.

If you would like to write an article for Biolog-e or get involved in the editorial side of Biolog-e please contact Aurora Levesley a.levesley@leeds.ac.uk

Have a great summer!
