Science Policy:

Not enough scientists know, or even care about science policy (see M. Peckham. 'A call to action from the lab bench', Nature Commentary, 1997).  It's easy enough to find out (i.e. see some links below, read Nature News Stories.  The Times, Financial Times and the Guardian all report on Science and Science funding, as do other newspapers).

What's more, it only takes something like 6 individual letters about a particular subject to an MP, before that MP is obliged to ask a question in parliament. If you don't think Science is well enough funded, or the research councils are doing their jobs right, or too much money is siphoned off into hare-brained schemes or whatever, write to your MP, and get your colleagues to do so too.  Even though this government has allocated extra money to the Science Budget in the last few years we still need to keep the pressure up.  We also need to do as much as we can to keep the public informed about what scientists do, to demonstrate that it is all worthwhile, and they should support the government spending extra money on us.
