What we have to say about ourselves!

Dr Julian A. Hiscox. Group leader.

Julian obtained his BSc (2.1) in Genetics from University College London in 1991 and conducted his PhD research on coronavirus transcription at the Institute for Animal Health (Compton) under the supervision of Dr Paul Britton. He did two post-docs; the first in the Department of Microbiology, University of Alabama at Birmingham (USA), under the mentoring of Prof. L. Andrew Ball and the second back at the Institute for Animal Health (Compton) under the supervision of Dr Dave Cavanagh.  Having (gratefully) robbed Dave and Paul's labs of reagents, kits and virus he set up his own group at the University of Reading in 2000.  In 2003 Julian moved to the University of Leeds where he is now a Reader in Virology and Leverhulme Research Fellow. His is a former infantryman and past member of Calder Valley search and rescue team, and currently enjoys hiking, camping, Wing Chun kung fu and mountain biking where for a shameless plug he rides an Orange G3 bike. He is married and has two children who are obsessed with becoming Sith Lords and are his Dark Apprentices.

Dr Mark Rodgers. BBSRC funded post-doctoral fellow. Mark obtained a 1st in Biochemistry from the University of Manchester and graduated with a PhD from the University of Leeds. He enjoys airsoft and big swords.

Petra Gorny. BBSRC/Wellcome Trust funded research technician. (Joint with John Barr).

Petra, has arrived in Leeds from an alpine region with her MSc in Biology. She sings the “Andachtsjodler” in Julian and John ’s lab to jazz up work speed with joy and laughter. Don’t even think of doing a technical disaster! She is here to help you outwith expertise in Protein interactions and lots of other connections.
