Immunology at Leeds is diverse and dynamic, with more than twenty laboratories and more than 100 immunologists that represents one of the largest groups of immunologists on a single university campus in the country.
Organisation
Currently immunologists are located within the Faculty of Biological Sciences on the main campus, in the Molecular Medicine Unit and various clinical departments within the School of Medicine at St. James's University Hospital, within the Imperial Cancer Research Unit at St. James's, and at Leeds General Infirmary of the Leeds NHS Trust.
Study Immunology
We offer a BSc Microbiology with Immunology degree.
Research
There are active research in the area of infection and immunity, autoimmunity, immunodeficiency, tumour immunology, immunotherapy and vaccine development, hematopoiesis and stem cell biology, structural immunology, and clinical immunology. Infectious disease research and studies of the interaction of bacteria, viruses and parasites with the host immune system is particularly strong at Leeds. Clinical immunology is also strong at Leeds and is fortunate in being able to utilise the resources of the Leeds NHS Trust which is one of the largest NHS Trusts in the UK.
LIIG was formed in June of 2000 with the aim of developing initiatives to further develop and promote immunology-based research across the university campus. In September 2000 the inaugural research retreat was held at the Thackray Medical Museum and attracted more than 100 participants from across the university, ICRF and NHS Trust. Other initiatives that have recently been developed in addition to this web site include a central list and mail server, IMMUNET, for posting and receiving announcements, a journal club and a trainee-led forum for individual laboratories to present and receive feedback on their current research. The university is also host for the West Yorkshire Regional Immunology Group of the British Society for Immunology.
