We believe University accommodation offers unrivalled value for money, but some postgraduate students may prefer to rent private accommodation. Private accommodation can sometimes be cheaper and can be a good option for some postgraduates.

What is the Student Union like?

Leeds has one of the largest student unions in the country.  Leeds University Union exists to represent, support and entertain students throughout their student years.

LUU has more student activities than any other union in the UK - over 200 student-run societies including sports groups, departmental groups, performance groups, faith groups, political groups, volunteering groups and general interest groups - to name but a few !

The Union building is located at the heart of the campus. As well as providing award-winning bars and nightclubs, it has shops and a supermarket, a bookshop, insurance and advice services.   See the Union website for more information about the Union and its societies.

The University of Leeds Students' Union was recognised as the "Number One Students' Union in the UK" in the NUS Awards 2009.

Sports Facilities

These are exciting times for physical activity and sport at the University of Leeds. The Edge, our brand new 25m, 8 lane swimming pool and a 200 station health and fitness centre opened in 2010. Take a virtual tour of The Edge facilities...

This is in addition to the fantastic facilities already available, which include:

5 multi-use sports halls, 7 floodlit hockey pitches, 5-a-side football courts, 32 grass pitches, 2 outdoor centres (Lake District and Yorshire Dales), floodlit synthetic pitch, fitness suite, 6 floodlit tennis courts, climbing wall, 10 squash courts, strength & conditioning room, 5 cricket squares, table tennis room and a dance studio.

The University and the Students Union provide excellent opportunities to keep healthy whether you want to participate for fun, at club level or elite level.  There are over 60  Union sports clubs to join ranging from cycling to sub aqua and basketball to sailing.

  • Before you arrive in Leeds, we will be in regular contact with you by email. We will forward important information and updates.
  • For some courses there may be the opportunity to engage in social networking with other students if you wish, so that you can make friends before you arrive here.
  • In your first week we introduce you to life in Leeds, life at the University of Leeds, and to the staff who will be teaching you. We give you guidance on the modules on offer and help you decide which ones to choose.
  • We have social events in the first few weeks at Leeds to help you make friends and settle in.

Our laboratories are modern and well-equipped. Practical work in the core skills modules and the specialised subject-specific modules is carried out in teaching laboratories in scheduled sessions.

Masters research projects are carried out in our state-of-the-art research laboratories or in the field, in the case of the Biodiversity and Conservation projects.

As you would expect at a major international research faculty, we have a huge array of facilities at our disposal . We have around 28,000 m2 of laboratories, research and teaching facilities located in the Astbury, Miall, Manton, Garstang and Worsley buildings

Library facilities

The University of Leeds Library is one of the major academic research libraries of the United Kingdom, attracting students and scholars from around the world. You will have access to books, electronic e-books, and online journals 24 hours a day every day.

Computing facilities

There is a dedicated Masters computer cluster within the faculty. This is open 24 hours a day. All faculty buildings are wireless networked, and the university facilities can be accessed from off campus. We make full use of information technology in our teaching, including delivery of course information, supplementary notes, assessment exercises through a computer-based virtual learning environment.
