Two academics from the Faculty of Biological Sciences have been shortlisted for the Bioscience HE Teacher of the Year award.

Dr Dave Lewis and Dr Neil Morris have both made the top five and will now develop and disseminate case studies of their teaching methodology and practice.

The Bioscience HE Teacher of the Year award seeks to identify the UK’s leading bioscience university teachers, recognising the invaluable role played by teachers in higher education. The award recognises outstanding learning and teaching practice in the biosciences.

Mike McPherson, Pro-Dean for Student Education said: “This is really excellent news. To have two colleagues shortlisted from the Faculty recognises our commitment to student education, which follows on from the foresight of Professor Ed Wood who pioneered biochemical education initiatives at Leeds. Our staff are constantly developing their research-led teaching approaches to utilise new technologies and stimulate students to understand their subject and develop a wide range of skills throughout their degree that will ultimately benefit to them in their future careers.”

The overall winner of the award will receive the ‘Ed Wood Memorial Prize’, named in honour of Professor Edward J. Wood, who established and became the first Director of the Learning and Teaching Support Network for Bioscience, subsequently named the UK Centre for Bioscience, who dedicated himself to the promotion of biochemistry and molecular biology education.

The winner will be announced in the spring and will be invited to receive their award at the Society of Biology’s AGM in May.

The award was launched by the Society of Biology and is sponsored by Oxford University Press.
