Sixth form students from across the country arrived in Leeds this week to experience what it’s like to study biological sciences.

Over 80 A-level students stayed at the Leeds campus to get a first-hand experience of living in halls, attending lectures and learning more about everything from neuroscience to zoology at the annual sixth form conference.

The two day residential event included lectures and practical classes on all aspects of bioscience giving prospective students the chance to use the teaching laboratories and explore the University campus.

Practical classes included microbial detection, exploring the biochemistry of blood and physiology of the heart. Students also had the chance to visit university facilities, meet current undergraduate students, discover more about our courses and find out more about the university admissions process.

Lectures included ‘Immunity, transplants and tissue engineering’, ‘folding proteins: nature’s origami’ and ‘sex, male domination and sleep in fruit flies.’

As well as academic lectures students had the chance to stay on campus in Henry Price flats and relax in the evening with a quiz and karaoke.

Dr Charlotte Haigh, Admissions Tutor and Event Organiser, said: “The idea behind the event is to give students interested in biological sciences an insight into the breadth of research that takes place at Leeds. It is a great way for students to experience life as an undergraduate student by attending lectures and practical classes. They also have the opportunity to meet with current undergraduate students and learn more about studying at degree level.”

Attendees to the conference were from across the country including students from Newcastle, Birmingham, Nottingham, Peterborough, Derbyshire and Richmond.
