The University of Leeds Postgraduate Researcher Conference celebrated outstanding work in the Faculty of Biological Sciences recently. The Faculty had two winners in the postgraduate researcher presentations category.
First place winner Jo Humphrey is studying her PhD in Biological Sciences and is supervised by Professor Nigel Hooper. Second place winner Thomas Forth works in the Physics/Life Sciences Doctoral Training Centre and is supervised by an academic from biological sciences, Professor David Westhead. They were chosen from over 40 presentations given by postgraduate researchers.
Jo spoke on her research into ‘Alzheimer’s disease: does a brain bodyguard backstab the brain?’ Thomas presented his research on ‘Seeing inside Malaria.’
The conference is an annual showcase of postgraduate research and a celebration of the significant contribution postgraduate researchers make to the research profile of the University. High profile keynote speakers included Dr Simon Singh, author, journalist and TV producer and Professor Kim Knott, Professor of Religious Studies at the University.
The event aims to engage the academic community across a wide range of subject disciplines and celebrate the success of postgraduate research. Other prizes awarded at the event included The University of Leeds Postgraduate Researcher of the Year and Postgraduate Research Image of the Year.
