Society of Biology interim accreditation

A number of our degree programmes have been recognised as demonstrating 'academic excellence in the biosciences' by the Society of Biology.

A number of programmes have been awarded interim accreditation by the Society of Biology.

Degree accreditation by the Society of Biology recognises academic excellence in the biosciences, and highlights degrees that educate the research and development leaders and innovators of the future.

Graduates from accredited degrees should develop a profile of skills and abilities, including:
• Proven practical experience
• An understanding of physics, maths, and chemistry in a biological context
• Analytical and problem solving skills; including data handling and interpretation, and effective use of statistics
• The capacity for independent study
• Effective communication to both specialist and non-specialist audiences
• A critical awareness of developments in your field of study
• The ability to independently apply appropriate experimental approaches in modern research, and an appreciation of effective experimental design
• A knowledge and appreciation of accepted protocols and methods, including an understanding of appropriate research conduct and ethics

The following programmes have received interim accreditation:

Applied Biology (Integrated Masters)
Biology (Integrated Masters)
Ecology and Environmental Biology (Integrated Masters)
Genetics (Integrated Masters)
Zoology (Integrated Masters)
Biological Sciences (Integrated Masters)
Biochemistry (Integrated Masters)
Medical Biochemistry (Integrated Masters)
Microbiology (Integrated Masters)

Interim accreditation: The accreditation criteria require evidence that graduates have met defined learning outcomes, including having gained a substantial period of research experience. Following the graduation of the first cohort of students from the programme and a successful demonstration to The Society that these graduate attributes have been attained, the programme may be awarded full accreditation.
