Step up to Masters
The Step up to Masters website is designed to help you Step Up to your time as a Masters student, so that you can make the most of all the opportunities offered at the University of Leeds, Faculty of Biological Sciences. It is designed to prepare you for living in Leeds but more importantly for studying at this higher level. You will find it packed with useful information.
How to apply for a taught postgraduate (Masters) degree
Application to the University of Leeds is a 5-stage process:
1 You decide on the qualification and programme to which you wish to apply.
2 You complete an online application form and upload supplementary information/documents to support your application.
3 We process your application.
4 We inform you of our decision.
5 If we make you an offer, you respond by accepting, declining or deferring.
All applicants should normally have, or expect to achieve, a First or Upper Second Class undergraduate degree (or equivalent). Applicants with equivalent relevant professional experience are encouraged to contact the Graduate School Office prior to applying.
Online applications
The quickest way to apply for an MRes/MSc programme is online. It’s quick and easy and you can track your application through its various stages.
We need the following documents to assess your application:
- Completed Web Application Form (for Taught Postgraduate Study)
- You must complete a supporting statement using the form provided in this link.
- Full CV
- Transcript of degree examination marks
- Two academic references/testimonials
- Evidence of English language qualification (non-native English speakers only)
- Copy of final degree certificate (if completed)

Application deadlines
Applicants are encouraged to apply as early as possible for taught postgraduate programmes. The normal University deadlines for receipt of applicants for entry in 2013 are as follows:
International applicants – 31st August 2013
Home/EU applicants – 10th September 2013
Please note that places for our programmes are limited and are likely to be filled prior to the dates listed above. International students are advised to apply no later than the end of May in the year in which they wish to enrol, to ensure that they have sufficient time to obtain a visa and prepare for arrival in the UK. If you intend to apply for funding, you should submit an application for a place at least one month before any specific scholarship deadline.
