The Step up to Masters website is designed to help you Step Up to your time as a Masters student, so that you can make the most of all the opportunities offered at the University of Leeds, Faculty of Biological Sciences. How to apply for a taught postgraduate (Masters) degree

Application to the University of Leeds is a 5-stage process:


1 You decide on the qualification and programme to which you wish to apply.

2 You complete an online application form and upload supplementary information/documents to support your application.

3 We process your application.

4 We inform you of our decision.

5 If we make you an offer, you respond by accepting, declining or deferring.

All applicants should normally have, or expect to achieve, a First or Upper Second Class undergraduate degree (or equivalent). Applicants with equivalent relevant professional experience are encouraged to contact the Student Education Office prior to applying.

Online applications

The quickest way to apply for an MRes/MSc programme is online. It’s quick and easy and you can track your application through its various stages.

Application deadlines

Applicants are encouraged to apply as early as possible for taught postgraduate programmes. Please note that places on our programmes are limited and have the potential to be filled if you apply later in the year.

International students are particularly advised to apply as early as possilbe to ensure that they have sufficient time to obtain a visa and prepare for arrival in the UK. If you intend to apply for funding, you should submit an application for a place at least one month before any specific scholarship deadline. An offer of a place is needed for many of the scholarships available to international students and closing dates can often be early in the year.

Masters Scholarships (2015 entry)

We award a generous range of scholarships to UK, EU and international students. We consider all eligible applicants who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement and excellent personal and professional skills.

The University also offers a number of scholarships, visit the scholarships website to find out more.

Eligibility for scholarships and bursaries will vary according to personal circumstances.

The Access to Learning Fund (ALF) is Government funding to help students access and remain in Higher Education particularly those who need financial help to meet extra costs which cannot be met from other sources of support.

Leeds Alumni Bursary
Available for students of all nationalities for Masters and PhD study. The bursary is for students who have graduated from the University of Leeds with a full undergraduate or postgraduate degree. The bursary will cover 10% of academic fees for eligible students.

Fee Scholarships
Up to 10 Fee Scholarships will be available from September 2015 for full-time and part-time students from the United Kingdom and students from other EU countries to undertake study for one-year taught Masters' degrees in any Faculty.

Leeds Masters Scholarships Scheme
212 Postgraduate Financial Support Package awards will be available for students from the UK or other EU country for Masters study in any Faculty/School from September 2015. The award will provide £10,000 towards academic fees and maintenance.

Anglo-Danish Society Scholarships
The Society administers scholarship funds which help Danish students to visit the UK for the purpose of post-graduate studies/research. Grants from £1500  are available to Danish graduates, with a first degree from a Danish university or higher education institution, who are undertaking postgraduate studies  at a university/HEI in the United Kingdom.

Centenary Award
The Centenary Award is run by NFU Mutual Charitable Trust and is open to students who have gained or are expected to gain a 2:1 or above in agriculture or a closely related degree. The awards are open to students who have been accepted or provisionally accepted on a Masters or PhD course in agriculture in the UK.

Leverhulme Trade Charities Trust
The maximum value of any bursary is £5,000. This amount may be adjusted according to the applicant’s personal financial need and to the amount of funds available. The Leverhulme Trade Charities Trust offers financial support for grocers, chemists, commercial travellers and their families.

Lhasa Scholarship
Available for Masters study in the Faculty of Biological Sciences from September 2015. The award is available for applicants who have been offered a place on one of the following MSc programmes; MSc Bioscience, MSc Biotechnology, MSc Infection Immunity and Human Disease, MSc Plant Science & Biotechnology. The award will provide £4,000 towards academic fees at the UK/EU rate.

Rapid Formations Entrepreneur Scholarship Programme
Rapid Formations will award 20 scholarships of £500 to candidates who can clearly demonstrate academic excellence and entrepreneurial potential. The funding may be used for any purpose related to the advancement of study.

Santander Scholarships
Up to 10 Santander Scholarships (subject to confirmation) will be available for students from the UK or other EU countries for full-time taught Master's study in any Faculty in session 2015/16.

The Yorkshire Ladies' Council of Education (YLCE)
The Yorkshire Ladies' Council of Education (YLCE) offers sums between £100 and £500 as a contribution towards academic fees.The awards are for British women over the age of 21 who cannot finance their chosen course and can present a case for special need.

Yorkshire Training Fund for Women
The Yorkshire Training Fund for Women provides small grants (usually £100-£300) to women with Yorkshire connections for training or courses leading to qualifications for employment.

A number of scholarships will be available for eligible international students studying for a taught Master's programme from September 2015 in the Faculty of Biological Sciences. The scholarships will provide a contribution of £2,000 towards academic fees. Applicants must be self-funding, classified as Overseas for tuition fee purposes and not be in receipt of any other University of Leeds award.

GREAT University of Leeds Scholarships - India 2015
2 GREAT University of Leeds Scholarships - India 2015 will be available for students from India to study full-time for a Masters degree from September 2015 in the Faculty of Biological Sciences. The British Council administers a variety of scholarships and awards to help international students from certain countries study in the UK. Details of the award schemes should be obtained from the British Council's representative in the candidate's own country.

Beit Trust - University of Leeds Scholarships
The scholarship provides a number of full awards and is open to students domiciled in Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe to undertake a one-year taught Master's programme in any School of the University.

Chevening Scholarships
Chevening Scholarships are the UK government’s global scholarship programme, funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and partner organisations. The Scholarships are awarded to outstanding scholars with leadership potential.

Commonwealth Scholarships (for Developing Commonwealth Countries)
Postgraduate scholarships are available to candidates from most developing Commonwealth countries. Students must apply well in advance through the Commonwealth Scholarship Agency in their home country. Each Agency will have their own internal deadlines prior to the final CSC deadline.

Fulbright - All-Disciplines (Open) Postgraduate Award
Fulbright All-Disciplines (Open) Postgraduate Awards are offered to US citizens to fund a one-year Master’s degree programme (or the first year of a longer Master’s or PhD programme) in any subject at the University of Leeds. The award provides a tuition fee waiver and £12,000 towards maintenance.

JJ/WBGS Japanese Nationals' Program
The JJ/WBGS Japanese Nationals' Program is available to Japanese nationals from a disadvantaged background who have been admitted to, or are currently enrolled in a development-related master's or doctoral program outside of Japan.

Leeds Marshall Scholarship
The Leeds Marshall Scholarship is for postgraduate study in any subject at either masters or doctoral level. The scholarship is open to US citizens who hold a first degree from an accredited four-year college or university in the United States with a minimum GPA of 3.7 (or A-). To qualify for awards tenable from October 2015, candidates must have graduated from their undergraduate college or university after April 2012.

How to find us

We are located near the city centre and the local signposting can be a bit tricky, so please allow plenty of time to get here. The Faculty of Biological Sciences is located in the southern part of the University of Leeds campus. Look out for the green and white signposts on campus to help you find your way.
