The University of Leeds forms part of the White Rose Universities Doctoral Training Programme. The programme will fund studentships in three key BBSRC priority areas, Agriculture and Food Security, Industrial Biotechnology and Bioenergy, and World Class Bioscience. Each year a number of studentships in these priority areas will be available. The projects will be interdisciplinary and encompass current research in the departments of Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Engineering, Maths and Physics that falls within the BBSRC remit and the remit of Doctoral Training Programme.

The programme is focussed on important biological questions, and will train students in the wide range of techniques in cell biology, biological chemistry and biophysics that are needed to push back the frontiers in these topical areas. Students will have unique opportunities to develop practical skills and a deep understanding of modern techniques, their principles and applications through taught courses in the first year. Students will then undertake a full research project in years 2-4, selecting from the wide range of topics offered by the programme's supervisors, and are able to tailor-make their project of choice.

Three Medical Research Council (MRC) Studentships are available from October 2015 at the University of Leeds for students undertaking a PhDin Biomedical and Health Research. The studentship will cover the cost of tuition fees (UK/EU rate) and a maintenance grant (approximately £14,000 for session 2015/16) for 3.5 years subject to satisfactory progress. UK applicants will be eligible for a full award ; European Union applicants will be eligible for an award paying tuition fees only, except in exceptional circumstances, or where residency has been established for more than 3 years prior to the start of the course.

Our NERC DTP encompasses research activities within three broad themes: the science of the Earth's Atmosphere, Geosphere and Biosphere. These themes cut across the six academic departments involved, reflecting the multidisciplinary nature of much of our research, which spans the breadth of the NERC remit. Applicants must normally either be studying at a Chinese University or working at a Chinese University or Company.

Up to one hundred and ten University of Leeds 110 Anniversary Research Scholarships are available for take up in any Faculty at the University of Leeds in October 2015. Awards provide academic fees at the University of Leeds standard UK/EU rate and provide a maintenance grant (£13,863 per annum in session 2014/15) for eligible applicants.

2 University Research Scholarships are available for students from the United Kingdom and other EU countries who are commencing PhD study from October 2015. Each scholarship will cover the cost of academic fees at the University's standard UK/EU rate and provide an annual maintenance grant (amount to be confirmed). Applicants must hold at least a UK Upper Second Class Honours degree or equivalent undergraduate degree.

1 Emma & Leslie Reid Scholarship will be available for a student from the UK or other EU countries for full-time PhD study from October 2015 in the area of diseases of the heart or brain (or kindred diseases). 1 Frank Parkinson Scholarship will be available for a student to undertake full-time PhD study from October 2015. The student must be born of British parents who have been domiciled in Yorkshire for a period of not less than ten years. The award will cover academic fees at the University of Leeds standard UK/EU rate and provide a maintenance grant of £10,000 per annum.
Closing date:1 June 20151 Mary and Alice Smith Memorial Scholarship is available for a British candidate who is single and lives in the United Kingdom wishing to undertake research into the prevention or cure of cancer or heart disease. The award will cover academic fees at the University of Leeds standard UK/EU rate and provide a maintenance grant of £10,000 per annum.

1 Frank Stell Scholarship will be available to a candidate who is resident or has parent(s) resident within the former administrative area of the County Council of the West Riding of Yorkshire wishing to undertake full-time research in the areas of Biology, Agricultural Science or Social and Political Science.
PhD project with Dr Al Benson and Prof Ed White. This is a demonstrator studentship: students will be expected to undertake at least 120 hours per year of demonstrating duties in the School of Biomedical Sciences. Funding is for 48 months, and includes a stipend at current BBSRC rates. Further details are available on request.
