Darwin Initiative

Funding for the GGEPL project was provided by a grant awarded to Dr. Simon Goodman, Dr. Andrew Cunningham and Dr. Virna Cedeño by the UK government's Darwin Initiative scheme. The Darwin Initiative is a grants programme that seeks to promote biodiversity, conservation and sustainable uses of resources in less developed countries. The initiative is funded and administered by the UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra). Galápagos National Park Service (SPNG)

The GGEPL project is jointly managed with the Galapagos National Park Service (SPNG), the governmental institution responsible for the protection and management of the protected areas in the Galápagos archipelago. Its objective is to protect and preserve the ecosystems of the archipelago and their biological diversity for the benefit of humanity, local community, science and the education. University of Guayaquil, Ecuador

The GGEPL laboratories are part of the Biotechnology Programme of the University of Guayaquil, Galápagos extension. A Masters programme in Biotechnology, taught by our staff, is now being offered at the Galápagos extension. Classes include hands-on practical training in molecular biology at the GEPL facility. In future, we also anticipate offering training programmes tailored to the staff of local insititutions involved with Galápagos conservation. University of Leeds, Institute of Integrative and Comparative Biology, UK

The Institute of Integrative and Comparative Biology at Leeds University is a major centre of excellence in biological teaching and research, with around 50 academic staff. It has research programmes in Ecology and Evolution, Conservation Biology, Genetics and Genomics, Parasitology, Plant Biology, and Biomechanics, Comparative Physiology and Animal Nutrition, Cell and Molecular Biosciences. Zoological Society of London, UK

The Zoological Society of London (ZSL) is a UK charity devoted to conservation and education. Our key goal is the worldwide conservation of animals and their habitats. The Institute of Zoology (IoZ) is the research division of the ZSL, specialising in scientific issues relevant to the conservation of animal species and their habitats. The Institute is based at ZSL's Regents Park site in London and is affiliated with the University of Cambridge.
