The Protein Production Facility



A state-of-the-art research facility for protein production

The Leeds PPF is a dedicated recombinant DNA and recombinant protein core Research Facility. We offer equipment, services, training and expert assisstance with all aspects of protein purification. The facility offers the following main services:

  • Project planning
  • In silico vector design
  • Cloning into your vector of choice
  • Expression trials in bacterial, insect and/or mammalian expression systems
  • Large scale purification

Housed on level 9 of the Astbury building at the University of Leeds, the facility works closely with all schools within the Faculty of Biological Sciences - Molecular and Cellular Biology, Biomedical Sciences, and Biology - and with the cross faculty Astbury Centre for Structural Molecular Biology.


The Leeds PPF offers a full service from vector design through to large scale purification. You can leave the work to us and after initial meetings to design your project we will perform all work for you, keeping you updated along the way. Alternatviely you can work with us, and we will train you to use our extensive state-of-the-art molecular biology equipment.

Stages in green are performed directly by the PPF. Stages in blue are performed either in collaboration with, or excusively by, other Research Facilities in FBS.




Equipment is starting to be delivered. Updates will be posted here.



Building works are complete and we anticipate testing of equipment will take place December/January and we will be open to users early in the New Year, 2017.

Building works progress


The final lab design has been appoved and we are ready for building to begin.

July 2016

The lab space has been stripped out ready for the builders to begin demolition of internal walls.

August 2016

Building works have now commenced.

September 2016

Building works are progressing well.

October 2016

Building works are complete, and we are now waiting for delivery and installation of all our new equipment.

November 2016

The first of our equipment has been delivered.

December 2016

The majority of our equipment has now been delivered and the lab is being stocked.
