FBS seminar
Kirk Leech is the Senior Project manager for “Understanding Animal Research” (formerly the Research Defence Society and Coalition for Medical Progress); an organisation which aims to achieve understanding and acceptance of the need for humane animal research in the UK, by maintaining and building informed public support and a favourable policy climate for animal research. In his presentation, Kirk will explain the work of “Understanding Animal Research” and how they see the current landscape in the UK in regards to public support for Animal Research. He will also address the tactics of the anti-vivisection groups, such as Freedom of Information and their campaigns, and look at the thankfully declining threat from Animal Rights Extremists. He will outline examples of greater openness on animal research that more and more universities are adopting.

As an academic it is increasingly important to both communicate and work with external partners from beyond the academic community. Research Councils are increasingly seeking to fund research which can clearly demonstrate its broader societal and economic impact, and they now require an Impact Summary and Pathway to Impact (formally known as an Impact Plan) as part of new grant applications. In this session we will ask what we mean by impact, with a presentation from Professor Eileen Ingham on the impact of her research, followed by an interactive exercise on drafting a Pathway to Impact. The session will be facilitated by Dr. Odette Dewhurst from SDDU, with assistance from Dr. Sally Whiteman, FBS Enterprise Officer, both of whom have research backgrounds in the biological/biomedical sciences. Hot and cold drinks, cakes and biscuits will be provided - please bring any additional lunch you want to eat. If you would like to attend, please register your attendance by email to Sally Whiteman, s.a.whiteman@leeds.ac.uk
