Professor John Colyer
John Colyer |
As Professor of Biotechnology, John has developed a keen interest in the development of technologies which move biological science forward. This has brought him close to the academic:commercial interface, where he has driven the translation of his research advances into commercial products for basic research and drug discovery.
John has founded three biotechnology companies, PhosphoProtein Research (1994), Fluorescience Ltd. (1998) and Badrilla Ltd (2005) based upon his research at Leeds. PhosphoProtein Research distributed antibodies to fellow researchers, particularly in the field of protein phosphorylation; Fluorescience generated technologies to observe biological chemistry in real time, and exploited these as drug discovery tools; and Badrilla has generated a calibration technology for immunoassays, which will bring absolute quantitation to systems biology. He has experience of intellectual property management, project and strategy management, raising finance for companies and running small businesses.
John is passionate about enhancing the academic culture of creating & sharing existing knowledge and transferring this into activities which share the benefit of research progress promptly. A key part of this process is the engagement of the academic inventors, who are instrumental in the initial steps, and who as part of a well balanced team can achieve this transfer whilst maintaining their academic drive and vigour.
