Bioenterprise Leeds: FAQs

We have members who are Academics, Research Staff, Post Graduate Researchers and Alumni from the University of Leeds that have an interest in the benefits and of the Knowledge Transfer (KT) agenda.

'Activities (that) are concerned with the generation, use, application and exploitation of knowledge and other university capabilities outside academic environments' (Russell Group Universities).'

For the Faculty of Biological Sciences this means activity in 7 key areas

It may differ for your own discipline but the core concepts should remain the same.

The information supplied in this network and the skills that it hopes to develop via supporting events are equally useful in both the commercial and academic arena. Any successful academic needs to be enterprising: securing research grants; building in ideas such as Intellectual Property; employing the right people; promoting an idea and managing tight budgets!

You may also be unaware of opportunities and approaches that help bring more money into the department via collaboration and the networks of external organizations and alumni that we are trying to develop.

You can only find other members by entering keywords into the search mechanism. If someone has entered these words into their profile and there is a match then their details will be returned. If this looks useful then you can contact the other members to ask for more information or establish further contact. For general queries 'ask a question'.

None of the main content can currently be viewed outside the University.

• You can attend the events (see the events calendar for future dates)
• You can ask questions ? or answer them.
• You can also email the administrators to edit or add new information in the Process Maps.

A good starting point would be to come along to one of the events and talk to some of the other members. You could also begin by browsing the content. If this raises more questions than it answers you can always 'ask a question' to the other members and start a dialogue this way.

1. Increase the level of awareness of existing activities
• Look at the events section to see what's happening
• If you missed an event try looking at (link) to view presentations that have been stored.
• Suggest an idea for an event or a speaker

2. Share existing knowledge to increase participation in the 7 key areas (link).
• Look at the process maps (link) and browse the information.
• Email the administrators with any comments or to add links.
• View the blogs on areas of interest.

3. Create new knowledge by encouraging networking opportunities
• Use the search facility to find resources and other people who may share an interest or have some information that could help you.
• If you have an idea (link) or a question for the committee (link) please submit them and you will be contacted ASAP.
• Register and attend the events.

This is done in two ways

• You can network through the events ? keep an eye on what's happening.
• Or if you need specific help in finding a resource a person with a particular expertise. If you have a an idea for research or commercial development that requires outside input from an area then try putting some keywords into the search area - it may be possible someone is in the network that can help you move forward. All members are registered so they should all have a like minded view.
